Wilco formed in 1994 following the demise of alt-country band Uncle Tupelo. Although at the time the Wilco lineup kept everyone from Uncle Tupelo besides singer Jay Farrar, Wilco's sound is more straightforwardly rock than Uncle Tupelo's was. The only constants in Wilco's current lineup are singer/guitarist Jeff Tweedy and bassist John Stirratt.

Wilco's first album A.M. and tour were modest successes based largely on Uncle Tupelo's still-active following, but Wilco have since established themselves as a band in their own right. They have never had a major radio or music video hit, but they maintain a devoted fanbase due to the consistent quality of their work and through regular concert tours and festival appearances. They had their biggest hit with album Yankee Hotel Foxtrot in 2001 because of the controversy surrounding its release: it was rejected by the band's record label, and after the band released it online for free to great acclaim, a subsidiary of the same record label bought it back. The band gained a well-deserved reputation for upholding their musical integrity.

Wilco are commonly referred to as "alt-country," but that descriptor does not allow for the band's use of tricky percussion and complex song structure. This is a band that makes audiences work to find tunefulness amid structured experimentation, but rewards abound for those who decide to take this risk. Start with Yankee Hotel Foxtrot and see if the controversy was justified!
